So more pictures of the amazing square to start this post.
The amount of detail added to every building, with styles spanning over 500 years…One of these buildings was the post office…all decked out in style like this…amazing!
The Belfry towers in the background over the next square…The green tarps are the restaurants and bars. Lots of fish, and Flemish food.
Here are a few more of the building i loved in the last post. YOu can see how much darker the stone is, and than the rich gold color. In lots of cities the guilding on buildings looks like bad paint from Graceland, but it works nicely in Belgium.
Saviya sitting on a bridge separating the old city from the new. Very pretty spot.
Here is an interesting gatehouse separating the old city. There is a traffic light inside that lets bike and car traffic through one direction at a time. I am pretty sure that the designers had hoofs in mind… Inside the area to the right of Saviya was a fireplace and chimney. I'm guessing to keep the guards warm in days past….
So one of the best expenditures in Bruges was the tour on the canalboat. Since it is a small city its easy to walk around it over several days, but the canals give you some perspectives that you wont see by foot. Even from the boat the Befry pops its head up over the city. Why cant our townhouses look like this in Seattle?
The boat trip was really excellent…one thing that was funny/disgusting was the underside of the bridges. These old bridges have centuries of water, minerals, rat poop or a million other things pass drop by drop through their natural stone and create a mysterious stalactites and stalagmites hanging from the bridge underbelly. I choose not to share those pictures.
The little footbridges were so pretty, with the fall ivy growing from them, turning colors with the start of the season.
And one of our favorite sites from the boat was this sleeping dog. Click the picture to see how happy he really is. He was sleeping in the same place at the start of the trip, as he was 45 mins later at the end of the trip…life is good for a window dog in Bruges.
