April 29, 2009 QueensNacht!

So has anyone ever told you that there are bikes everywhere in the Netherlands. They are called fietsen, and really called OmaFietsen meaning grandma bikes.

No seriously there are a lot of bikes, its 40% of Amsterdam's traffic.

Every 10 feet in Amsterdam is another Snackbar. These have various Broodje (sandwiches), and most common are these Donner Broodje shops. Saviya got her first Broodje Kip with Frites (slathered in mayo or Knooflook saus which is garlic...)

So Queens Night is the evening before the infamous Queens Day. It is basically for adults, mostly wine and beer in various neighborhood squares, or in large parties put together by local radio or bars/clubs. So you walk around and have some beers and enjoy the evening, largely from about 10pm to 1 or 2am. Than you get some sleep so you can have a full Queens Day.

This is a castle that is now a bar in Niewemarkt. Thousands of people pour into this square to drink and dance to live music.. We walked miles across Amsterdam this night and finished having a Magner's cider at an Irish pub, and a IceColdHeiniken at our neighborhood pub, the Cafe de Punt. This beer was at Zero degrees celcius and very goede! -Colin
