May 4, 2009 Introduction to Dutch Cuisine Diary Entry 1

So we have already had dozens of interesting moments the last week or so as we discover new foods in the Netherlands. We often think we have the right product, only to find out we are way off. But today I want to talk about one of my favorite Dutch delicacies.
The awe inspiring fast food known as FEBO!

These are little postage stamp sized resturaunts that are 90% self serve. There will be one or two guys working so that you can have some fresh french fries or a shake, but FEBO is all about stuffing coins into a machine and gulping down whatever is hiding behind door number 3.

So you walk into FEBO, and see this bank of small glass windows. Each vertical column contains one of maybe 2 options for some deep fried mystery. Now if you speak Dutch its not as much fun, because then of course you know what everything is. However, I only know enough Dutch to stumble around, so when i go to FEBO, I am all about the KaasSouffle. Besides being deep fried cheese which is always yummy, it keeps me from discovering my alternatives. I have several times tried other items trying to be adventurous. I have tried their burgers (asianburger?), but the real goods are the various Krokets. Krokets such as Rundvleeskroket is basically like an eggroll that is filled with beef onions and gravy..thats right gravy snacks...They even throw krokets on a bun so you can have this deep fried goodness on a yeasty bun..
What adds to the glory is that their slogan isnt Ba-da-bum-bum-bum...it's FEBO - De Lekkerste! Which means FEBO, the Tastiest!
So just like any local fast food, the peeps here love em (or completely hate em), and when you are drunk, walkin round the red light district, or any other bad reason to stumble into this place, you do as the Romans would if they had FEBO...It is on the tour I give when you come visit...-Colin
